April 28th marks the birthday of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, arguably the most legendary figure in Korean history. 🎂

If you’ve ever traveled to Korea or explored its culture, you’ve likely come across his name. In honor of his birth, I’d like to introduce you to the man who saved a nation.
🐢 Mastermind Behind the 'Turtle Ship' (Geobukseon)

Admiral Yi commanded the world's first armored warships, known as Turtle Ships. With a roof covered in iron spikes to prevent enemy boarding, these uniquely designed vessels completely shifted the paradigm of naval warfare at the time.
🌊 13 vs. 133: The Miracle of Myeongnyang

In one of history’s most incredible military feats, Admiral Yi defeated a massive fleet of 133 enemy ships with only 13 of his own. His ability to read the tides and use the local geography to his advantage is still studied in naval academies worldwide today.
🎖️ An Unbeaten Legacy: 23 Victories, 0 Defeats

Throughout the Imjin War, Admiral Yi fought 23 battles and won every single one. While he is often compared to Britain’s Lord Nelson, Yi’s achievements are truly one-of-a-kind, especially considering he achieved these victories despite a severe lack of supplies and government support.
"Do not let my death be known to the enemy."
Even as he fell in his final battle, his last concern was for his country and the morale of his men. This selfless leadership is why he remains the #1 most respected figure among Koreans to this day.
April 28th: Admiral Yi’s Birthday

In Korea, this day is a national commemorative day to celebrate his life and spirit. He wasn't just a soldier; he is the spiritual pillar of Korea.
